About the koru
The koru is an iconic symbol of New Zealand. "It is often used in Maori art as a symbol of creation – it is based on an unfurling fern fond. Its circular shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement and its inward coil suggests a return to the point of origin." (Encyclopedia of New Zealand).
“Perpetual movement” and “return to the point of origin” – very fitting for cyclists!
About our logos
The logos, incorporating stylised koru, are registered trademarks of The Shipping Corporation of New Zealand Limited. New Zealand Line Limited is the licensed user of the trademarks. The koru can be used by a limited few as it is strongly protected by trademark and copyright law. The business of The Shipping Corporation of New Zealand Limited and New Zealand Line Limited is shipping but we make our iconic New Zealand trademarks available to New Zealanders and visitors to our country by having a range of clothing that both promotes New Zealand and our companies.
About the Cycling top and the shorts
Both the top and the shorts are proudly made in New Zealand. It would be cheaper to have them made overseas but we are resisting doing that as we feel that buyers of a product promoting New Zealand prefer to buy something actually made in New Zealand. We hope you agree. There are other 'New Zealand' cycling tops and shorts available on the web and from retail outlets but in most cases these are not made in New Zealand!
The Top
The fabric is COOLMESH light breathable polyester 50 + SPF. We have steered away from the black of many other NZ tops as black is not a good ‘colour’ for the summer. The silver of the iconic silver fern has been taken into the arms and shoulders. We have brought in black via the logos and text.
The top has a ¾ length hidden YKK zip – the long length of the zip is good for those real hot days when the climbs are long. But keep that helmet on!
There are three pockets on the rear for provisions for the day and a spare tube. And the mobile - they are good for the emergency call or to report one of those motorists who shouldn’t be on the road!
The Shorts
The shorts are made from 11 panels to provide a good fit. Most shorts are made from less panels to reduce the manufacturing cost but they don't give as good a fit as an 11 panel short.
The fabric is hardwearing Nylon Lycra Base, the chamois is made in Italy and is a comfortable 3D elastic interface chamois with a soft micro-fibre finish and is permanently anti-bacterial. The shorts are finished with a comfortable leg gripper.
